Choosing Solar Lights for the Garden
During the past ten years solar lights have become so popular that they can now be purchased in the big box discount stores like WalMart and K-Mart. Ordinarily one would think these lights purchased from stores known for discount prices would be of a lesser quality. That is not necessarily the truth. The outer part of the light may be made of plastic in some cases, but most of the lights work very well, especially is used for the garden.
One of the most popular types of solar lights for garden use is the stake light. These lights can be simply pushed into the ground along a garden walk and providing there is sufficient sunlight during the daytime the lights will begin to glow as the sun sets. Most of the lights stand about 18″ tall when fully staked into the ground. To provide adequate light along a path or walkway it is best to place the lights no more than three feet apart.
There are other styles, of course. Some are embedded into a form that resembles a rock to create a spotlight effect. Others have globes that are colored to produce a totally different ambiance. Still others are covered with glass or clear plastic butterfly designs to add a touch of fantasy to the walkway.
Whatever design or style one selects, Westinghouse solar lights are among the best. Recently used following a tornado that left thousands of people without electric power, the Westinghouse lights we placed in the yard during the day and brought in during the night to provide some light. Costing only a few dollars each, the Westinghouse solar lighting systems provided adequate indoor light for not just one night, but for two. This is important because when placed in the sunniest of gardens, there will be days of rain. It is nice to know that even with a day of gloom and clouds, the garden lights will glow brightly come sunset.
