Utilizing Outdoor Flood Lights

Today I will be writing about outdoor flood lights and how installing these outdoor light fixtures can improve your outdoor living spaces.  Most homes have inadequate lighting on their porches and patios.  When they build homes they usually install simple, one light bulb fixtures for the sake of saying they installed a light fixture.  When you think about it, these light fixtures barely put out enough light to help you find your keys when you trying to unlock the door.  Many people wish they could light up their entire backyard for special occasions and installing an outdoor floodlight is the perfect answer to this problem.  These lights make perfect patio lighting.

The term flood lights conjures images of super bright lights that are almost too powerful to be around.  It is true that many outdoor flood lights are this bright but there’s really no reason that they have to be this bright.  Outdoor flood lights are extremely versatile light fixtures because they have more than one light bulb and each bulb can be easily aimed in the direction that you would like the light to be.  A good way to use outdoor flood lights is to install more than one of these light fixtures and install a separate switch for each one.  This makes it possible for you to have more control over the exact parts of your yard that you light up with the outdoor flood lights.

It’s possible to make outdoor flood lights even more versatile by mixing and matching the wattages of light bulbs that you use.  Maybe you would like to have a couple very bright light bulbs aimed at your basketball court and a couple of lower wattage bulbs aimed at your picnic table. With outdoor flood lights it’s quite easy to do this.

When it comes to buying outdoor flood lights you’ll want to remember that some are equipped with motion sensors to turn them on and off when someone approaches.  If you are installing a motion sensor on a porch where it would be helpful if the light automatically turned on when you walked onto the porch, you should buy the type with motion sensors.  If you are installing an outdoor flood light to illuminate your hot tub area, it wouldn’t be a good idea to install one with motion sensors because the sensors would cause the lights to constantly turn on and off.

Finding the Right Patio Flood Lights

Your patio space requires a variety of outdoor lighting features to make it safe and enjoyable. Garden lights are just one type that you may be searching for. Consider how you can use outdoor flood lights to give your patio design some key areas of illumination. If you think about it, your lighting design will be determined by how you plan on using your patio space.

As the popularity of outdoor rooms continues to rise, so will the availability of a variety of outdoor lighting options. There are a range of patio lighting options available today for more rustic lighting looks or for highlighting specific features. Lighting for your outdoor areas serves essentially the same purposes as your indoor lighting.

Both ambiance and warm lighting are features that an outdoor chandelier can provide. Depending on the type of patio cover you have, you can also hide unique lighting features beneath the rafters to illuminate specific areas of your room or patio. Your lighting choices can also help you to create the walls of your outdoor room. Can’t you just imagine this look now? The perfect seating area is almost magically illuminated by a beam of light coming from beneath the darkness of night sky.

This concept is in contrast to the more functional aspects of an outdoor flood light. The design of most flood lights is for function, not looks. Often, they are mounted on or near your home and provide a wash of light for a large area or pathway. If your area requires a fair amount of light, a motion sensor will help to make the lighting operate more efficiently. You will find this to be more convenient and also save you electricity.

Having a motion sensor eliminates the need for a switch. This is helpful when a particular area may make it difficult to install one. This way, you never have to remember to turn the lights off. A motion sensor flood light will also come on if there are intruders or animals in your space, giving you greater peace of mind.

You can also find light emitting diode (LED) technology in patio flood lights. Energy efficiency is the hallmark of LED technology. Both traditional light bulbs and compact fluorescent bulbs do not last nearly as long as LED bulbs. The LED lights also operate at cooler temperatures. Climbing ladders to replace bulbs will not be in your immediate future if you go with this style. While more expensive than traditional patio flood lights, these LED styles make for a great investment.
